What is the First Food Pollinators Initiative?

Advocacy

LF advocates for the protection of native pollinator habitat protection, especially at locations of importance to Tribal Nations and Indigenous Peoples (TIP).

Networking

LF is working to establish a resource hub to share information and opportunities about native pollinators and their habitats with TIP.

Training

LF is leading the development of culturally relevant and culturally appropriate training on the identification of native pollinators for TIP.

Example: Louping Reciprocity Project

In 2022, LF worked with Western Washington University (WWU), the Sustainability Engagement Institute, and a private landowner to develop a native plant phenology chart for land use for local school district's outdoor education activities.  LF provided advice and guidance to integrate native plant, pollinator, and water source survey into the education activities.  See the WWU student report here.

Example: Pollinator Relatives Workshop

Over the course of 2025, LF built a Planning Team and established a Tribal Advisory Group to guide the development and implementation of a training workshop for TIP to be held in the Inland Northwest in 2026.  LF anticipates sharing the save the date for the Pollinator Relatives Workshop very soon!
